How to extract audio from a video: convert MP4 to MP3
October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
A recorded lecture you want to listen to on your commute, a video recording of a meeting where only the sound matters, an interview to transcribe, a podcast published as a video, a personal concert recording: it is often more practical to have just the audio. An MP3 file is far lighter than a video, plays on every device and can be listened to with the screen off.
This guide explains how to convert an MP4 video to MP3 online, what quality to expect, and a few precautions worth knowing.
Convert MP4 to MP3, step by step
- Open MP4 to MP3.
- Drop your MP4 video.
- Run the conversion, then download the MP3 file.
When an MP4 contains several audio tracks, the conversion selects the first one. Listen to the beginning and end of the MP3 to check that you have the language or track you wanted.
The tool is free, up to 5 files per day. Conversion runs on our servers with FFmpeg, the reference tool for audio and video processing; files expire after 24 hours and are then deleted by automatic cleanup.
What audio quality?
The MP3 is encoded at high-quality variable bitrate (roughly 170 to 210 kbit/s depending on the content). It is a very good balance:
- speech (lectures, meetings, interviews) is perfectly clear;
- music stays pleasant to listen to on headphones or a speaker;
- the file is much lighter than the original video.
A useful reminder: conversion cannot improve poor source audio. If the video was filmed in a noisy room, the MP3 will have the same noise.
The MP3 follows the duration of the extracted audio track, which may differ from the video’s duration. Listen to the beginning and end to check the result.
What if the video has no sound?
A video without an audio track (a screen recording without a microphone, a silent animation) cannot produce an MP3. In that case the tool shows an error rather than handing you a silent file.
Other audio formats
Depending on your use, another format may fit better:
- WAV: uncompressed, ideal for editing the audio in a sound editor or for professional transcription. Use MP4 to WAV.
- MP3: the most universal, for listening and sharing.
The Convert a file page lists every available audio and video conversion, for example MOV to MP4 for iPhone videos.
Common uses
| Situation | Tip |
|---|---|
| Re-listen to a lecture or talk | MP3, then play at 1.25× or 1.5× in your player |
| Transcribe an interview | MP3 for an online transcription tool, WAV for professional software |
| Archive a meeting | MP3, much lighter than the video |
| Edit a podcast | WAV to keep maximum quality while editing |
Copyright: what is allowed
Extracting the audio of a video you made, or that you are allowed to use (your meeting, your lecture, a royalty-free video), is fine. Extracting and distributing the music or content of a protected video without permission, however, may infringe copyright. Use the tool for your own content.
Listen before deleting the original
Keep the original video until you have checked the MP3.
- Listen to the beginning, a middle section and the end; check voices, channels and any unexpected cut-off.
- Check the selected track or language if the video contains several.
- Compare the duration with the original audio track, which may differ from the duration displayed for the video.
- Avoid repeated MP3-to-MP3 conversions: start from the original when making another version. A higher bitrate cannot restore details already lost.
Frequently asked questions
Is MP4 to MP3 free?
Yes, up to 5 files per day across all free tools.
Can I convert an iPhone video (MOV)?
The MP4 to MP3 tool expects an MP4 file. For a MOV video, convert it first with MOV to MP4.
Will the MP3 be as long as the video?
The MP3 contains the video’s first audio track. Its duration may differ from the duration displayed for the video; check the beginning and end of the downloaded file.
Is my video kept on your servers?
Files uploaded for processing expire after 24 hours. Expired data is then deleted by automatic cleanup.
Why do I get an error?
Most often because the video has no audio track, or the file is damaged. Play the video to check it has sound before converting.
