How to merge PDF files into one (free, no software needed)
October 28, 2026 · 4 min read
A rental application that asks for "a single PDF file", a job application with CV, cover letter and diplomas, an expense report with a dozen receipts, a report assembled from several chapters: merging PDFs is one of the most common document tasks. The good news is that it is also one of the simplest, as long as you get the order right and prepare your files.
This guide explains how to merge PDFs online for free, how to organise your files before combining them, and how to avoid the usual pitfalls (files too large, upside-down pages, protected documents).
Why merge PDFs?
- Follow instructions: many portals (government services, letting agents, schools, recruiters) accept only one file.
- Make it easier to read: a recipient would rather open one complete document than ten attachments.
- Archive neatly: a client file, a project or a year of invoices in a single file.
- Print in one go: one job sent to the printer, in the right order.
Merge PDFs online, step by step
- Open Merge PDF.
- Drop at least two PDF files, or select them from your device. You can add more later with the upload area.
- Put the files in order with the Move up and Move down buttons. The first file in the list will open the final document. The Delete button removes a file added by mistake.
- Click Download to get a file called "merged.pdf" containing every page, in the order you chose.
The tool is free, up to 5 files per day. Merging happens directly in your browser: your documents are not uploaded to our servers to be combined, which matters for ID documents, payslips or bank statements.
Prepare your files before merging
A few minutes of preparation saves redoing everything:
- Name your files in order (01-cv.pdf, 02-letter.pdf, 03-diploma.pdf) so they are easy to sort.
- Check orientation: a page scanned upside down stays upside down. Fix it first with Rotate PDF.
- Remove unnecessary pages (a blank page, duplicate terms and conditions) with Delete PDF Pages.
- Convert photos of receipts to PDF with JPG to PDF, or iPhone photos with HEIC to PDF.
- Convert Word documents with Word to PDF before adding them.
After merging: shrink and reorder
The merged file weighs roughly the sum of the original files. If it exceeds the limit of an online form or an email provider (25 MB for Gmail, 20 MB for Outlook.com), run it through Compress PDF: the "Balanced" level greatly reduces scans and photos while keeping them readable.
If you notice afterwards that a page is in the wrong place, there is no need to start again: Reorder PDF Pages lets you move pages within the document.
Special cases
Password-protected files
An encrypted PDF must be opened with its password before it can be merged. If you own the file and know the password, remove the protection with Unlock PDF, then merge.
Different page sizes
You can perfectly well merge an A4 document with a Letter-size document or a landscape page: every page keeps its original dimensions. When printing, your printer fits each page to the paper.
Forms and digital signatures
Digital signatures (certificate-based) do not survive a merge: the merged file is a new document. Merge first, sign afterwards. For documents already signed by someone else, send them separately instead.
Merge or compress: which comes first?
Merge first, then compress. Compressing each file separately and then merging also works, but you do the job several times and merging does not reduce the size.
Frequently asked questions
How many PDFs can I merge?
You need at least two files. The free limit is 5 files per day in total across all free tools, and every file added to the merge counts: merging 3 PDFs uses 3 files. A subscription removes that limit.
Does merging reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied as they are: text, images and links keep their original quality. Only compression, if you choose it afterwards, reduces images.
Are my files uploaded to the internet?
Not for merging: the files are combined in your browser. Only a check of how many files you have used today goes through our servers, without the content of your documents.
Can I merge PDFs on an iPhone or Android phone?
Yes. The tool works in your phone's browser: select the files from the Files app (iPhone) or your file manager (Android).
How do I split a merged PDF again?
With Split PDF, which creates one file per page or per page range.
All your files, the right tools in one place.
