How to rotate a PDF and save the rotation permanently
October 28, 2026 · 3 min read
A scanner that swallowed a sheet upside down, a landscape table in the middle of a portrait report, a photo of a document taken at an angle: badly oriented pages are among the most common PDF problems. You can rotate them on screen in your PDF reader, but the rotation is not saved: the recipient will still see the page the wrong way round.
This guide explains how to rotate one or several pages of a PDF and save the rotation in the file, for free.
On-screen rotation or saved rotation?
In Acrobat Reader, Preview or your browser, the "Rotate view" command only changes the display while you read. The file itself is not modified. To fix a document permanently before sending, archiving or printing it, you need to save the rotation in the PDF, which is exactly what Rotate PDF does.
Rotate a PDF, step by step
- Open Rotate PDF and drop your document.
- Thumbnails of every page appear.
- For a single page, use the rotate buttons on its thumbnail.
- For the whole document, use Rotate left or Rotate right in the side panel.
- Check the thumbnails, then click Download.
Each click turns the page a quarter turn (90°). Two clicks flip it completely (180°), which fixes a page scanned upside down.
The tool is free, up to 5 files per day, and rotation is applied in your browser: your document is not uploaded to our servers.
Is quality preserved?
Yes, completely. Rotating a PDF page recompresses nothing: text stays selectable and images keep their quality. Only the page's display orientation changes, and every PDF reader and printer respects it.
Common cases
A page scanned upside down
Find it in the thumbnails and turn it 180° (two clicks). This is very common with automatic document feeders, when a sheet was loaded the wrong way.
A landscape table in a portrait report
Rotate only those pages so they can be read on screen without tilting your head. When printing, the printer fits the page to the paper.
A document lying on its side
Typical of A4 documents scanned sideways, or photos converted to PDF. Use Rotate right or Rotate left to turn every page at once.
Photos of documents with the wrong orientation
Phone photos can appear sideways once converted to PDF. Convert first with JPG to PDF or HEIC to PDF, then fix the orientation here.
Combine with other tools
- Put pages back in order with Reorder PDF Pages.
- Remove blank pages with Delete PDF Pages.
- Combine several corrected documents with Merge PDF.
- Rotation puts a page the right way up but does not recognise its text. This version does not provide OCR; keep the original digital file to search or copy words.
Frequently asked questions
Will the recipient see the rotation?
Yes. Unlike a PDF reader's view rotation, the rotation is saved in the downloaded file.
Can I rotate just one page?
Yes, with the rotate buttons on its thumbnail. Other pages are not affected.
Can I rotate by an angle other than 90°?
No: the PDF format handles page rotation in quarter turns (90°, 180°, 270°). To straighten a slightly skewed scan, rescan it or crop the original image.
Are my documents uploaded to the internet?
Not for rotation, which runs in your browser. Only the daily allowance count goes through our servers, without the document's content.
Can I rotate a protected PDF?
Yes, if you know its password: you are asked for it when the file opens.
